Having lived the majority of my life in states that have a high yield of snow for the winter, I have been completely humored and amazed by the way Virginia shuts down at the slightest hint of snow. It is a completely different world out here and it makes me laugh to see some of our neighbors and community react to the weather. Last year (our first here) we were stunned when Kaylies' school was cancelled for 2 days during the winter, when we had less than 10 inches of snow TOTAL for the entire winter. This year, to our surprise (and everyone else that lives here as well) mother nature has done a complete turn-around and the snow doesn't seem to want to stop. As a result, we had a really big blizzard that basically shut down the whole DC area for more than a week. It turned out to be a really nice second winter vacation. Kaylie was home from school for 8 consecutive school days and will not have to make them up at the end of the school year because of the way they have the schedule set up to accomodate snow days. Nathan was blessed to not have much work during the week and we were all home together to watch the snow come down and stay....

Kaylie and Carter have decided they really really like to eat snow, much to my chagrin!!

We had a great time trying to shovel ourselves out of our home and to unbury our van out front. Here Nate was playing horsey in the snow with Abigail an Kaylie. Abigail had a hard time staying on.

A look at the first storm's aftermath on our van. It took a good 2 hours with three of us shoveling just to get it out.

Kaylie had fun climbing and playing "King/Queen of the Mountain"

Carter was such a great helper! Between shoveling and eating the snow he seemed to be in heaven. He loves manual labor outside and it was cute to see him work so hard!

Trying to find the van. My hands kept getting numb, reminding me of my mother. I seem to get more like her every day.

Me and the kids trying to make our way to the neighbors' house to borrow a shovel. We were not prepared to have to shovel, and even if we could've made it to the stores, they were not open or were sold out!

It took us at least half an hour to get ready to go outside. The girls lasted about 10 minutes. Hmm, that math doesn't sound very worth it to me!!

Abigail helped us relive "The Christmas Story" in real life. She looked hilarious, especially watching her walk in the snow. It was worth the 30 minutes of getting her ready just to see it.

A shot from the front with her mis-matched gloves and hat. Funny.

Lily also chose mis-matched gloves and a hat that was a little too small for her head.

Later that night, Nate got a little crazy.....

He decided to show the kids how to rise up in the snow....

What did he do?

Yah, he's in there alright...

He jumped hard and then had a hard time getting up.

Where is he?

A shot of the deck after the first 22 inches came down and before Nate jumped in it.

Carter playing in the snow.

Nate's first journey outside. We don't have a screen door anymore, so the snow was literally blocking the door.

He's such a kid at heart! Teaching our little ones how to make a snow angel in 3 feet of snow. Smart!

Just follow me, and stop eating that snow!

A view from inside looking out on the deck. The kids were so excited! We have had more snow in the past month than all records set in the past 105 years here in Virginia! It is crazy and has been interesting to see how everything just closed down and slowed to a stop. I have personally loved having my whole family at home and having no where to go but still enjoying electricity (over 500,000 homes in our county don't have it). We have been spoiled by this blizzard!!!
